This week we have a 3 day course in from Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions LLC (ALE). The team comprises of British, American and New Zealand firefighters who spend 6 months at a time in Antarctica. They will learn techniques for using multi fire fighting resources, such as foam and dry powder for extinguishing fires, as obviously, water would freeze!
The group do a day of theory on materials, temperatures, toxicity; theory of fire fighting and tactics along with the ‘media’ used; aircraft types, entry points, hazards that explode, pilot actions etc.; emergency planning and potential scenarios.
The next couple of days include practical skills training and scenarios. The group learn hose management and got really close to big blazes. They then cover the specifics of aircraft wing fires, undercarriage fires and engine and undercarriage fires. They learn techniques for using multi fire fighting resources, such as foam and dry powder for extinguishing fires.
